Tiller is working to introduce a new way to automatically fill data into Google Sheets that is faster, more reliable, and more automatic. This new “Direct Fills” service is available for newly created Google Sheets if the feature has been enabled for you.
We've enabled early access for a select group of customers to help us evaluate the new feature. It's not 100% baked just yet but we need more customers using it and sharing feedback in order to ensure that it's ready for all our customers.
Check out the FAQ below to learn more about this new feature and how it compares to the old way of filling Google Sheets.
If you are interested in testing out this new service and providing feedback, please complete the opt in form and we'll notify you when you've been given access to the feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which Fill Service my sheet is using?
You can find the Fill Service information for your sheet from the Settings section on the Tiller Console after you click on a spreadsheet's name.
What is the difference between Direct Fills and Sidebar Fills?
Direct Fills are more automatic where the data will be filled into the spreadsheet shortly after it’s available in our database and does not require clicking the Fill button in the sidebar to get the data in the spreadsheet or waiting for a timed Auto Fill.
You can still use the other tools in Tiller Money Feeds like splitting transactions or adding manual transactions in spreadsheets serviced by Direct Fills, but there is no Fill button available at the top of the sidebar.
Do I still need to install Tiller Money Feeds?
With the new Direct Fills service Tiller Money Feeds is completely optional. The tools and features in Tiller Money Feeds are still very useful, but you no longer need this add-on in order to get data filled into your spreadsheet or to use AutoCat.
Can I still use AutoCat with a Direct Fills sheet?
Yes. AutoCat works with Direct Fills sheets. You can run AutoCat from the Tiller Console (click a sheets’ name to access the Run AutoCat button and AutoCat settings) or you can run AutoCat from the Tiller Money Feeds sidebar.
Some AutoCat features are not yet available for Direct Fills sheets like the ability to run AutoCat against ALL transactions or use Batch Review for AI Suggest.
Will all my institution data automatically fill into my spreadsheet now?
Direct Fills do not remove the requirement to manually refresh institutions that require MFA or a manual refresh. Some institutions will still require you to manually refresh on the Tiller Console at https://my.tiller.com.
Can I use this with Microsoft Excel workbooks?
Currently we don't have Direct Fills available for Excel. We expect to be able to offer this capability for Microsoft Excel in the future, but it would require that the Excel workbook be stored on OneDrive and we would not be able to support Direct Fills to spreadsheets stored locally on a computer.
What should I know about the Google permissions required?
When you “Authorize Sheets” you’re granting Tiller access to “See, edit, create, and delete all your Google Sheets spreadsheets.”
This describes the broad capability of the permission category, but it does not reflect how Tiller actually interacts with your documents.
Because these permissions are bundled together and are required for the API we need to be able to directly write to your spreadsheet, we cannot request a more restricted scope.
We only interact with spreadsheets where we have access to its specific ID, and we only receive that ID when you intentionally connect a sheet to Tiller. Without you handing us that specific ID, we cannot see or access your other files.
If you prefer not to grant these permissions you can for a limited time still create a sheet using the Sidebar Fills service. However, we may not continue to support Sidebar Fills indefinitely. The end of life for Sidebar Fills is still TBD.

Can I connect my existing spreadsheet to the Direct Fills service?
At this time there isn’t a way to connect an existing spreadsheet to the Direct Fills service. We will offer a seamless migration path for sheets being filled by the sidebar in the future, but we don’t currently have an ETA.
Why did we make this change?
Fills to Google Sheets have been serviced by the Sidebar for about 6 years now. As we’ve grown, and as our customers’ data sets have grown, we learned that there are significant limitations with Google’s sidebar coding environment (AppsScript) powering these fills. Those limitations have made the fills for some customers unstable and therefore Sidebar Fills are no longer a long term scalable solution for Tiller to power Google Sheets.
Direct Fills also allows us to automatically fill the data when we receive it from the data provider, whereas the Sidebar Fills could only be automatically filled on a timed trigger or by manually clicking the fill button. This “extra” step created a lot of confusion and frustration for customers, especially when combined with the requirement to be logged in to the sidebar in order for the Auto Fill to actually happen.
Transitioning to the Direct Fills, and the permissions they require, also allows us to offer more robust features, including a better on the go experience from mobile devices.
Can I use the Direct Fills option if I have Google Advanced Protection turned on?
Currently there isn’t a way to use the Direct Fills if you have Google’s Advanced Protection turned on due to the scopes required by the APIs needed for that fill service. We hope to work with Google to have our application approved for use with Google’s Advanced Protection, but we don’t have an ETA on when that feature will be available. If you aren’t able to grant the necessary permissions due to Advanced Protection you can for a limited time still create a sheet using the Sidebar Fills service. However, we may not continue to support Sidebar Fills indefinitely. The end of life for Sidebar Fills is still TBD.
Click here to get started with a Sidebar Fills sheet and follow the on screen instructions after clicking the link.
Will you always support both options?
We may not continue to support Sidebar Fills indefinitely. The end of life for Sidebar Fills is still TBD. We will not end of life Sidebar Fills until after we have built a seamless migration path for those spreadsheet to take advantage of the Direct Fills service.
Why can't I get past "Authorize Sheets" ?
If you're getting stuck on the step where you're prompted to "Authorize Sheets" it may be due to your browser blocking pop ups. We are aware of this behavior in Safari, but it could be an issue in other browsers as well.
In Safari you can click the "Show blocked pop up window" button to show the authentication screen.
How to test
If you've been given access to this feature we recommend that you run it side by side with a Sidebar Fills sheet to compare the datasets.
If you haven't created a Sidebar Fills sheet you can do that by accessing the Foundation Template with instructions here.
Things to watch for & report
If you run into any of the following please write directly to beta@tillerhq.com
You get an error during the Google Sheet creation process
Duplicate transactions getting filled (see how to identify duplicates below).
Missing transactions (when comparing to your Sidebar Fills sheet)
AutoCat not categorizing transactions
Transactions and/or balances are significantly delayed (more than 5 minutes) making it into your spreadsheet after an institution refresh on the Tiller Console.
