Advanced Security for Tiller's Google Sheets spreadsheet access

Learn more about the Advanced Security feature that limits Tiller's Google Sheets access in your Google Drive for Direct Fills.

Written by Heather Phillips

The Advanced Security feature allows you to grant access to only files you choose, using Google’s File Picker, rather than all your spreadsheets in Google Drive.

Things to know:

  • When linking a sheet for the first time, you will be required to select the specific Google Sheet you're trying to connect to Tiller via Google Drive's file picker. The spreadsheet must be configured for use with Tiller.

  • You will need to allow cookies for my.tiller.com in your browser settings in order for the file picker to work properly (this is a Google limitation and not something we control).

Upgrading your sheet to Direct Fills

If you're wanting to upgrade your sheet to Direct Fills without the all spreadsheets permission follow the guidance based on whether or not you've already granted the all sheets permission. Use these steps to confirm whether or not you have already granted the all spreadsheets permission.

No permissions granted yet

If you have not granted the all sheets permission yet use the steps below.

To upgrade your Sidebar Fills sheet with limited permissions:

  1. Toggle on the Advanced Security feature under Preferences

  2. Navigate back to the main Console page

  3. Click on the sheet name you want to upgrade

  4. Click the Upgrade button and follow the prompts

  5. You should be prompted to select the spreadsheet you selected to upgrade using Google’s file picker after the Authorize Sheets steps.

    1. Note you may have to go through the select spreadsheet step twice (we're working on a fix for this).

All sheets permission already granted

If you’ve already granted the all spreadsheets permission, use the steps below to remove that access and turn on the Advanced Security setting.

  1. Visit your settings page on the Tiller Console at https://my.tiller.com/settings

  2. Turn on the Advanced Security feature near the top under Preferences

    1. This will revoke the "all spreadsheets" access that Tiller previously had.

  3. Click "Grant access" when prompted to grant only access to specific files you choose.

  4. Go back to the main Console page

  5. Click the name of the spreadsheet you want to upgrade

  6. Click the "Upgrade" button and follow the prompts.

Creating a new spreadsheet

When you have Advanced Security enabled and you create a new spreadsheet you'll see the option to Open Foundation Template or Connect an existing Tiller sheet.

Start with the Foundation Template

Unless you have a spreadsheet you know is compatible with Tiller we recommend using the Foundation Template option.

  1. Click "Create a spreadsheet > Start with Google Sheets"

  2. Click "Open Foundation Template"

    1. This will open the Foundation Template in a new browser tab.

    2. Click "Use Template" in the top right of the new browser tab to make a copy in your Google Drive

    3. After making your copy, you can rename it (click into the spreadsheet name in the top left to rename)

  3. Go back to the Tiller Console browser tab

  4. Click "Select your copy"

  5. Locate the file in the Google Drive file picker window. Usually it's the first file listed or you can search.

  6. Once located, select it, then click the "Select" button

  7. You'll either be prompted to select the accounts you want linked to the sheet or it will start filling with all accounts (depending on how many sheets you already have linked).

Link an existing Tiller sheet

If you have an existing Tiller sheet you want to link to the Direct Fills service you can use this option.

  1. Click "Create a spreadsheet > Connect an existing Tiller sheet"

  2. Locate the file in the Google Drive file picker window. You may need to search for it, but the easiest thing is to make sure it's open in the same browser session.

  3. Select the file in the File picker then click the "Select" button.

  4. You'll either be prompted to select the accounts you want linked to the sheet or it will start filling with all accounts (depending on how many sheets you already have linked).

Confirm permissions

If you need to confirm whether or not you’ve already granted the all sheets permission:

  1. Look for “Tiller” in the list of connections

  2. If you don’t see “Tiller” listed there then you haven’t granted these permissions

    1. Note “Tiller Feeds” is the Tiller Money Feeds add-on sidebar and should remain as is.

  3. If you see it there, click on “Tiller” and if the permissions say “See, edit, create, and delete all your Google Sheets spreadsheets” then you have granted the all sheets permission already
