Using the Tiller Money Feeds Add-on for Google Sheets

The Tiller Money Feeds add-on provides key features for managing your finances including AutoCat, transaction splitting, and additional templates.

Written by Heather Phillips

Think of this as the user manual for the Tiller Money Feeds add-on for Google Sheets that offers basic information about the features available in the add-on. If you're looking for the content for the Microsoft Excel add-in it's here.

If you're new to Tiller and trying to get started we recommend using the Foundations Guide for getting setup instructions and tips.

Overview

The Tiller Money Feeds add-on powers up Tiller's Google Sheets with various features to help you stay on top of your finances including AutoCat, transaction splitting, manual transactions, and template management. You can find it under Extensions > Tiller Money Feeds at the top of your Google Sheet once installed.

For some Google Sheets it's the way you'll have data filled into the spreadsheet (Sidebar Fills), but for others it's just a helpful extension with handy features (Direct Fills sheets). Read more.

How bank data gets into your sheet

All new Google Sheets created from the Tiller Console use Direct Fills, Tiller's default, fully automatic fill method. With Direct Fills, your bank data fills into your spreadsheet as soon as your accounts refresh, with no fill button and without needing to use the Tiller Money Feeds add-on.

The Tiller Money Feeds add-on is still useful for Direct Fills users as it provides access to AutoCat, transaction tools, and template management, but you don't need it just to get data into your sheet.

Not sure which fill method your sheet uses? Check the spreadsheet's Settings on the Tiller Console by clicking its name and choosing Settings > Fill Service.

If it says Direct Fills, you're on the current default. If it says Sidebar Fills, see the legacy section below.

Authentication & Access Tokens

The add-on will require you to re-authenticate once every 90 days. The primary access token for the add-on expires every 90 days. This is a security best practice. You may have to log in more frequently than 90 days if you do not launch the add-on frequently enough because the token will also expire after 14 days of inactivity.

You will be automatically logged out and have to log back in at least once every 90 days or when you leave the add-on sidebar open in your spreadsheet overnight. The log out will mean Auto Fill in your Google Sheet (enabled by default) will not run. The Auto Fill will resume when you log back in.

As of late summer 2024, Google's security policy's no longer supports leaving your spreadsheet with the add-on open in the browser overnight. If you attempt to use the add-on after it's been left open in your spreadsheet over night you'll receive an error indicating "the state token is invalid or has expired" on the login page. You need to close your spreadsheet each night and re-open the next morning to successfully stay logged in to the add-on for the 90 day period.

Add-on features

The Tiller Money Feeds add-on offers a few basic features to help you efficiently gain clarity about where your money is going, and puts you in control.

AutoCat

Use AutoCat to help you stay on top of categorizing transactions by building a customized rule set. You’re in control of your categories and how they get assigned with Tiller. AutoCat automates it with fast and easy rule building options right in the add-on sidebar.

Transactions & Manual Accounts

Use various transaction related tools and access Manual Accounts management to power up your Tiller spreadsheet workflows like splitting transactions or adding manual transactions.

Manage Manual Accounts

Use the Manual Accounts option to add and track balances for accounts that Tiller cannot automate for you.

Templates

Use Browse or Manage to install, restore or upgrade your Foundation Template sheets.

Connected Accounts

Click the "[N] Linked Accounts" link at the top of the Add-on to access the Connected Accounts screen, which displays all accounts you have connected to Tiller. Connected Accounts is where you Link or Unlink accounts to this specific spreadsheet.

To link an additional account:

If you need to link an additional account for an institution you already have connected to Tiller to a Google Sheet:

  1. Click Linked Accounts at the top of the add-on.

  2. Expand the institution by clicking its name.

  3. Toggle on the accounts you want to link.

  4. Click the ← Back button.

The add-on will check for and fill available data for the newly linked account(s).

If an account you want to link to the sheet doesn’t appear in the list click "+" icon in the Connected Accounts screen to visit the Console at https://my.tiller.com/ and add it as a new account under the Account Summary on the Tiller Console. You will need to exit and return to the Connected Accounts screen in the add-on for the newly connected account to appear. You can also link it to the spreadsheet form the Tiller Console.

If you have any issues linking an account to your spreadsheet using the Tiller Money Feeds add-on contact us via the chat tool in the lower right corner of the Console.

To unlink an account:

If you no longer want to feed data from one of your accounts to a Google Sheet

  1. Click Linked Accounts at the top of the add-on.

  2. Expand the institution and toggle off the accounts you want to unlink.

  3. Click ← Back.

⚠️ The account will no longer feed new data into the sheet, but the unlink process does not remove existing data for the account. You will need to manually remove any data that was added if you no longer want to see it in the sheet.

Review our guide on how to remove data for unlinked or removed accounts.

Templates

The Templates feature in the Tiller Money Feeds add-on allows you to install, restore, or update Foundation Template dashboards and sheets as well as some community solution templates in Google Sheets. Please note that some community templates are still only available through the Tiller Community Solutions add-on or in the Google Sheets show & tell category.

The following Tiller-supported templates are available to insert, update, or restore:

  • Spending Trends

  • Monthly Budget

  • Yearly Budget

  • Debt Payoff Planner

  • Savings Goals

  • Balances

  • Accounts

  • Insights

Some community templates available in Tiller Money Feeds include:

  • Category Tracker

  • Net Worth Tracker

  • Bill Payment Tracker

  • Retirement Planner Template

  • Monthly Analysis Sheet

  • Cash Flow Forecast

How to install a template

  1. Launch the Tiller Money Feeds add-on sidebar.

  2. Under Templates, click Browse.

  3. Click Expand All and scroll to browse, search for templates by keyword, or filter by the following:

    1. By Tiller: templates built and supported by the Tiller Team

    2. Featured: templates recommended by the Tiller team

    3. Installed: templates you’ve already installed

    4. Updates: templates that need updates - disabled if no templates need updates

  4. Collapse or expand the card by clicking on the template title to see more details about the template.

  5. Click Install to add the template to your spreadsheet.

Dependent sheets that are missing will also be installed. For example, if you install the Balances sheet and the Accounts sheet is missing the add-on will also install the Accounts sheet because the Balances sheet is dependent on it.

About the Templates Feature

Click Browse from the main Tiller Money Feeds sidebar to view all available templates available whether installed or not. Click Manage from the main Tiller Money Feeds sidebar to pre-select the "Installed" filter to only view templates you've already installed.

If you already have the template installed you'll see a green check mark beside the name. Templates needing an update will show an orange update icon instead of a green checkmark.

When you click on the template name to expand it's card you will see an "Update" button if a newer version is available or a "Restore" button if you have the current version already installed.

  • Search bar: This allows you to search for templates by keyword or name for easy navigation

  • Filter Toggles: Click to turn on/off

    • By Tiller - templates built and supported by the Tiller Team

    • Featured - templates recommended by the Tiller team

    • Installed - templates you’ve already installed

    • Updates - templates that need updates

  • Creator Badge: This allows you to quickly visually determine if a Template is Tiller- or Community-built. These are supported differently as explained below.

Supported by Tiller vs Community/builder

Support will differ depending on who built the template. You can easily determine this by the badge which appears next to the template name.

Templates noted as supported by Tiller that have the Tiller badge are part of the Tiller core product and these are supported by the Tiller support team via email/chat.

Community-built solutions that indicate they're supported by someone other than Tiller and have the Community badge are supported in the community. You can contact the builder directly in the Tiller Community or use the Ask Anything category to post your question AFTER searching to ensure your question isn't already answered.

Click a template name to expand it's card and then choose the Get Help or Learn More button to access content or help for that template.

If you're having trouble installing a template using the Tiller Money Feeds add-on you can write to our support team using the chat window in the lower right corner of this page (fastest response) or via support@tiller.com.

Updating templates

You'll see an orange update icon and an "Update" button if a newer version of the template is available.

  1. Launch the Tiller Money Feeds add-on from the Extensions menu

  2. Choose Manage under Templates

    2. Overwrite existing is fine for all other sheets if you have not made customizations or entered data. ⚠️ Overwriting replaces the sheet, archiving creates a backup before replacing. ⚠️

  5. When the process is finished a success message will appear. Do not make edits to your sheet while the update process is running.

Restoring sheets

You can restore a broken Foundation Template dashboard or a Community-built solution that's available in the Tiller Money Feeds add-on using the Templates feature.

  1. Launch the Tiller Money Feeds add-on from the Extensions menu

  2. Choose Manage under Templates

  3. Click on the respective template then click Restore for the sheet that needs to be fixed

  4. Choose whether you want to Archive or Overwrite

  5. When the process is finished a success message will appear. Do not make edits to your sheet while the restore process is running.

Transaction Tools

Easily access transaction tools such as splitting a transaction or adding a manual transaction right from the home screen in the Tiller Money Feeds add-on.

Manual Transactions

Automate manually adding individual transactions for automated (feed) or non-automated accounts. For non-automated accounts you can update the balance for manually tracked accounts while adding the transaction. Reconciling these manual transactions to their automated matches is not yet available in this add-on.

The add-on doesn't have a way to automatically match and merge (reconcile) manual transactions that you've added when Tiller brings them in so you would end up with duplicates in that situation.

There is a "reconcile" tool in the Tiller Community Solutions add-on if you're using Google Sheets that you can use to reconcile them with their automated matches. This tool requires that the Transactions sheet has a column with the header "Metadata". The Metadata column is added by the Tiller Community Solutions add-on to support various workflows such as CSV imports. We do plan to bring this feature into the Tiller Money Feeds sidebar in the future, but there isn't a timeline on when that will be available.

Transaction Splitter

Split a transaction amount across multiple categories. Save splits to use again later. Apply notes and tags to your splits right from the sidebar.

Settings

You can access your settings directly from Extensions > Tiller Money Feeds > Settings or you can click the menu icon in the bottom right of the add-on and choose Settings.

Auto Fill (Sidebar Fills only)

When this setting is toggled on the Tiller Money Feeds add-on automatically adds the latest available transaction data. This auto fill process runs every 6 hours, 4 times a day.

The availability of data depends on the security settings that you have turned on at the bank. Accounts that require two factor authentication cannot refresh automatically so you will need to then click "Fill Available Updates" in the main sidebar to pull these transactions in right after the refresh.

Auto Fill sign in requirements

In order for the Auto Fill feature to work you should remain signed in to the Tiller Money Feeds add-on to keep the secure connection to our database available to the add-on. If you sign out of the Tiller Money Feeds add-on or you’re automatically signed out you will need to sign back in and turn the Auto Fill feature back on to allow the automatic updates.

Auto Sort Override

When new transactions are added to your Transactions sheet by the Tiller Money Feeds add-on they are added to the bottom and then sorted to the top automatically. This override setting, when it’s turned on, will leave these transactions at the bottom. This is a great feature for folks who want to use Tiller with another service like Zapier and/or Airtable where the tool expects the new rows to be added to the bottom and stay at the bottom.

Remove Duplicates

Running this tool will find and remove duplicate transactions with identical Transaction IDs. This does not correct duplicates with different Transaction IDS that may have been added by our data provider due to a connection error.

Transactions that have been split will be highlighted in red if there is a duplicate that corresponds to its transaction ID.

If you unlink the sheet from the Tiller Console it can no longer be updated with your bank data. If you re-link a sheet to the Tiller Console you may get duplicate transactions.

Sheets linked to more than one user

If your spreadsheet has already been linked by another user, you'll see a "sheet already linked" message. Re-linking to your account will unlink it from the other user, though it may still appear on their Console. If you already have 5 sheets linked, unlink one first to avoid issues.

If you notice unexpected duplicates or strange fill behavior related to sharing or relinking, contact Tiller support via the chat tool at https://my.tiller.com.

Other possible unknown issues

Due to the nature of how our product works with spreadsheet linking, sharing sheets, and filling data from many accounts, plus past unlinking/relinking there are likely some edge cases we were not able to test that could introduce duplicate transactions into your spreadsheet or cause other weird behavior.

If you notice any weird behavior with Tiller Money Feeds related to the fill for Google Sheets or find duplicate transactions in your spreadsheet please reach out via the chat tool on the Tiller Console at https://my.tiller.com.

Legacy: Sidebar Fills

This section applies only to older Tiller spreadsheets created before Direct Fills launched. If your sheet uses Sidebar Fills and you'd like to switch to the current default experience, you can upgrade in a few clicks, see the upgrade guide.

If you experience any errors in Tiller Money Feeds and you are using Sidebar Fills, we recommend that you upgrade your sheet to Direct Fills.

What is Sidebar Fills?

Sidebar Fills is the older method for getting bank data into your Google Sheet. Instead of filling automatically in the background, it requires either clicking a "Fill Available Updates" button in the add-on sidebar, or enabling Auto Fill to run on a schedule.

If you don't see a fill button in your add-on sidebar, your sheet is already on Direct Fills — no action needed.

Authentication & access tokens

The Sidebar Fills add-on requires re-authentication every 90 days for security. The token can also expire after 14 days of inactivity — when it does, Auto Fill pauses until you sign back in.

Important: As of late 2024, Google's security policy no longer supports leaving your spreadsheet with the add-on open in the browser overnight. Close your spreadsheet each night and reopen it the next morning to stay signed in for the full 90-day period.

How Auto Fill works

Auto Fill runs approximately every 6 hours and fills new available transactions and balances into your sheet.

Important notes:

  • Auto Fill requires you to remain signed into the add-on. If signed out (manually or after 90 days), Auto Fill pauses and resumes when you sign back in.

  • Accounts with two-factor authentication (2FA) or where your bank disables auto-refresh cannot update automatically. For those accounts, manually refresh the institution on the Console, then click "Fill Available Updates" in the add-on.

To manually refresh and fill 2FA or auto-refresh-disabled accounts:

  1. Click Refresh next to the institution. (Plaid connections: use Connection > Edit Credentials instead.)

  2. Return to the add-on and click "Fill Available Updates".

⏳ After refreshing, allow a few moments for data to become available before filling.

To disable Auto Fill:

  1. Open Extensions > Tiller Money Feeds > Settings, or click the menu icon in the lower right of the add-on.

  2. Toggle off Auto Fill.

If you run into connection errors, see the Financial Connections Error Troubleshooting Guide.
